Management of work ability
Comprehensive tools and services to support the management of work ability.
Mehiläinen Working Life Services provides companies with comprehensive tools for successful management of work ability and supports the entire work community in maintaining and promoting work ability.
Management of work ability means systematic cooperation between the company’s internal actors and external partners, which, if successful, can prevent and reduce incapacity for work in the work community. The success of work ability management is promoted by the goals, indicators and monitoring tools agreed jointly between the company and occupational health care.
Incapacity for work causes significant direct and indirect costs to the employer. These costs can be addressed through systematic work ability management.
What is management of work ability?
An important part of the company's HR management, which is strongly supported by occupational health with shared operating models.
Supporting the company's strategic goals, efficiency of work and good supervisory work.
Promoting and maintaining the personnel’s work ability, health and safety and supporting continued work.
Identifying, assessing, anticipating and managing risks that threaten work ability and resources that support work ability.
Cooperation between the company, employees, occupational health care and other partners (insurance companies, Kela).

TyöKuntoon operating model
The TyöKuntoon operating model is Mehiläinen’s harmonised way of supporting the company’s management of work ability. The operating model ensures that the customer company and employees receive comprehensive, proactive and uniform services nationwide. The model combines the basic occupational health care cooperation services and the company’s own activities into a single entity, ensuring successful occupational health care cooperation.
Mehiläinen's electronic tools for management of work ability
Mehiläinen's unique reporting and work ability management tools ensure that both the company and occupational health care have a real-time overview of the employees' work ability and can act at the right time according to the early support model. Electronic tools enable seamless cooperation between the company and occupational health care. The tools can be used to identify work ability risks at an early stage and thus also prevent reduced work ability.

Efficient personnel profiling improves the effectiveness of operations and improves the well-being of your personnel.
Supports the supervisors in their managerial work based on the early support model. If an employee is absent from work for two weeks straight or has four individual stints of absence, for example, the Superior’s Compass alerts the employee’s immediate supervisor and urges them to have an occupational well-being and/or return-to-work discussion with the employee. Superior’s Compass allows supervisors to easily request, for example, occupational health care contact or a work ability assessment for their employees.
Benefits of the Superior’s Compass for supervisory work:
- Alerts and reminds the supervisor when action is required
- Gives advice on correct procedures
- Compiles the necessary data to support discussions
The Work Ability Compass is a shared monitoring and communication tool for supervisors, HR and occupational health care. It enables the early detection of employees at risk of disability and ensures the best possible support for maintaining their work ability and return to work.
Work Ability Compass:
- Provides a real-time assessment of the work ability situation of the organisation
- Helps to identify individuals at an elevated risk in an early stage
- More early reaction to work ability risks: supervisors contact occupational health earlier
- Creates a culture of early support in the company through transparent management of work ability
- Changes the focus of HR work to planning and implementation of procedures for the management of working ability
- Improves the acceptability of work ability support with a process that is consistent and equal for all employees
We also offer tools designed for occupational health professionals, which enable your company’s designated occupational health professionals to receive real-time alerts and reports on the work ability status of your personnel.
These include:
- Compass tasks and alerts
- Sickness-related absence alert – in the case of prolonged absence
- Accident alert – sickness-related absence with an injury diagnosis
- eSurvey alerts – high-risk persons detected in questionnaires
- Other appointment number and diagnostic alerts
- The accumulated amount of sickness-related absences is visible all the time in the person's data – helps to detect people who are often ill
- Long sickness-related absence reports (ending and beginning) with the limits and intervals agreed with the customer
- Lists to track specific diagnoses
- High-risk person lists and major consumer analyses
