The most important thing is to tell your nurses and doctors about your fears. It's also worth telling how you want your fear to be handled. Some are reassured if things are told in detail - others do not want to hear anything extra. The nursing staff must discuss certain things with you, but for a large part of the time spent in the operating room, you can listen to music with headphones, for example.
Relaxing medication is possible to get even in numbness procedures so that you can doze off or sleep. If agreed, you can come to the hospital a little earlier, and then you will get the relaxing medication in advance.
Being awake during surgery is extremely rare in modern medicine. At Mehiläinen, sleep is monitored during surgery, for example, with a sleep depth meter. With the help of the meters, sleep is adjusted deep enough so that being awake is not possible during surgery.
When it is not an emergency, it is always worth postponing the surgery due to flu, fever, or a similar respiratory infection. A healthy person has the best conditions to recover from surgery. Anesthesia and numbness can worsen flu symptoms, coughing can become difficult and the disease can prolong. Surgical wounds also heal better and faster when you are healthy.
Scratches, wounds, pimples, or eczema on the skin increase the risk of infection in the surgical wound. Hair should not be removed from the skin in the surgical area, as it may cause wounds and thus increase the risk of infection. If there are scratches, eczema, or redness on the skin in the surgical area, it is advisable to contact the hospital as soon as possible.

After anesthesia, you can eat and drink when you feel alert and do not have nausea. On the day of the procedure, your hydration is also taken care of intravenously, and you get painkillers. Some strong painkillers can cause nausea. Therefore, it is advisable to start drinking and eating later than immediately after waking up.
Recovery after surgery is very individual. After anesthesia, you may initially feel drowsy and tired, and your throat may feel rough. After numbness, the numbed area may still be numb and movement limited. However, your condition improves all the time and recovery happens surprisingly quickly. The recovery time is also proportional to the duration and extent of the procedure.
The prerequisites for going home include the following:
- no severe pain or nausea
- you can drink or eat
- urination goes smoothly
- you have an adult escort for the home trip and with you for the next 24 hours
- you have received aftercare instructions orally and in writing
Functional capacity may be impaired after anesthesia or numbness. The surgical patient often needs help in normal functions even after being discharged from the hospital.
A prerequisite for day surgery is that the patient has company at home, otherwise, he/she must stay in the hospital overnight.
The final cost of the surgery is influenced by, for example:
- the type of anesthesia used in the surgery (numbness, sedation or relaxing medication, anesthesia)
