How can diversity be promoted in the workplace?
Leading occupational psychologist Merike Aminoff’s tips for promoting diversity in the workplace
Diversity in the workplace refers to the differences between employees in various areas, such as age, gender, ethnicity, nationality, language, religion, sexual orientation, family situation, disability, health status, neurodiversity, educational background, values and personality. Diversity is not only about the presence of different people but also about appreciating and utilising these differences in the operations of the organisation.
Finnish legislation, such as the Non-Discrimination Act and the Equality Act, also prohibits discrimination at work and in employment. The employer is obligated to take action against discrimination and to promote gender equality and the non-discrimination of employees. Discrimination can be direct or indirect, and includes harassment.
Inclusivity: The partner of diversity
Inclusivity means an equal and non-discriminatory way of working where all employees feel welcome and valued. An inclusive work community offers psychological safety where everyone can be who they are, without fear of discrimination or prejudice. This creates an environment in which the benefits of diversity, such as creativity, innovation and economic viability, can be realised.
Diversity and inclusivity bring many benefits, such as improved customer satisfaction, a positive employer image, attractiveness of the workplace, occupational health and safety, occupational well-being, employee satisfaction and financial profitability. Developing equality and inclusion is both a responsible and competitive activity for the employer.
Diversity must be actively managed
Prejudices and biases can guide our behaviour and choices more than we realise. It is important that those in managerial and supervisory positions take a critical look at how biases can affect the organisation’s operations. Diversity and inclusivity work is based on increasing awareness of discrimination and striving to eliminate discrimination.
Diversity must also be actively managed. Promoting psychological safety, supporting curiosity and appreciating different views are key. Diversity and different backgrounds can be beneficial when they are taken into account in tangible ways in the workplace.
Diversity and inclusivity are key factors in modern working life. They not only promote well-being in the workplace but also improve the competitiveness and reputation of the organisation. It is time to embrace diversity in our daily work life and tap into all of the opportunities it offers.
