Surgical treatment at Mehiläinen is suitable for you when:
- you need quick access to surgery.
- you want to influence the timing of the operation.
- you value comprehensive care and a smooth pathway.
Seeking a surgical assessment
A referral is always required for surgery. To access surgical treatment, book an appointment for a surgical assessment with a Mehiläinen surgeon. The operating physician assesses the need for surgery and, if necessary, makes an internal referral to Mehiläinen or to the public sector.
Scheduling and booking of the surgery
If your surgery is planned at Mehiläinen, we proceed to schedule the date. The timing is primarily guided by the medical urgency of the procedure. Your personal preference is always taken into account.
A surgical coordinator will contact you based on the doctor’s referral to agree on the date. You can also contact the hospital yourself and arrange the appointment with the coordinator according to the treatment plan.
Before surgery – preparation as part of the patient’s pathway
A health questionnaire will be sent to you via OmaMehiläinen. Please complete it as soon as possible in the OmaMehiläinen app or at oma.mehilainen.fi (login with bank or mobile IDs).
Self-paying customers are contacted to book a surgery time once the completed form has been received. For service voucher and insurance customers, we first confirm the suitability of the service voucher or the insurer’s payment commitment before booking.
- Preparation instructions: once your surgery time is booked, the surgical coordinator will review the instructions with you by phone. You will also receive written preparation instructions.
- Outcomes monitoring: we actively monitor the quality and success of our care. For knee, hand, shoulder, ankle and back surgeries, as well as foot surgery, you will receive a questionnaire before and after the operation to assess your recovery.
- Examinations and appointments: necessary imaging, laboratory tests and physiotherapy are arranged according to the doctor’s plan.
- Arrival instructions: we will confirm the exact arrival time at booking or soon after. If you cannot arrive at the agreed time, please inform the surgical coordinator as soon as possible. You can find our clinic contact details here.
What happens at the hospital on surgery day?
When you arrive, we take care of you throughout the day. You will meet the operating surgeon, the anesthesiologist and the nurses, who will go through the day’s steps with you. You will discuss your preferences for general anesthesia or regional/local anesthesia with the anesthesiologist, and together we will choose the safest option based on your procedure. Safe surgical care is ensured by thorough preparation, clear division of responsibilities and smooth information sharing.
