AI systems and their purposes at Mehiläinen
Mehiläinen actively develops and utilizes AI to improve the quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of its services and to advance the entire healthcare and social services sector. The EU AI Act classifies AI systems according to the following risk levels:
- Prohibited use cases: including social scoring, exploitation of vulnerabilities, emotion recognition, biometric categorization, and manipulation of users.
- High-risk use cases: Use is permitted provided that the AI system meets the established requirements and a fundamental rights impact assessment required by the regulation has been prepared for the AI system. For example, medical devices.
- Limited risk use cases: Use is permitted provided that the AI system meets the established transparency requirements.
- Minimal risk use cases: Use is permitted. No specific regulatory requirements.
We utilize AI in many ways to improve the care and services we provide to our customers. The most significant purposes are described below.

| AI-assisted drafting of customer messages | We use AI to draft customer messages. |
Key requirements of the AI Act
Mehiläinen complies with the EU AI Act in its operations. Our role may be either as a provider of an AI system (when we develop the system ourselves) or as a deployer (when we utilize a ready-made system as part of our services). Our operations are guided particularly by the following key requirements of the regulation, categorized according to our role.
When we act as an AI system provider, we are responsible for the system's compliance. For high-risk systems, we use quality and risk management systems and ensure their accuracy, robustness, and cybersecurity. We also comply with the transparency obligations of the AI Act: we inform our customers when they interact with AI and clearly mark content produced by AI.
When we act as an AI system deployer, we ensure human oversight of high-risk systems, retention of log data, and other necessary technical and organizational measures. We always inform the relevant parties when a high-risk AI system is involved in decision-making concerning them.
Additionally, we continuously train our staff and ensure their adequate AI literacy.
Supervision and development of AI systems at Mehiläinen
At Mehiläinen, the use of AI systems is supervised in terms of medicine, data protection, information security, and technology in accordance with Mehiläinen's internal control processes. Additionally, the operation, risks, and impacts of AI systems are regularly assessed to ensure that the systems meet legislative requirements.
We actively monitor AI-related regulation and update our operating models as necessary. We also encourage our customers to provide feedback on our AI systems so that we can continuously improve their quality and safety.
