New medical clinic of Mehiläinen’s subsidiary Meliva opened in central Tallinn – service network expands also with acquisition
Press Release 13.5.2024
Mehiläinen’s subsidiary Meliva continues to grow, and the network of units in Estonia is expanding. A new full-service medical clinic has opened in the city centre of Tallinn, and three new dental health units join the network through the acquisition of City Clinic dental medical clinics.
Mehiläinen’s new 3,000 m2 medical clinic now serves customers in the city centre of Tallinn. The medical clinic offers general medical emergency services, specialist medical services, occupational healthcare, as well as dental health, aesthetic medicine and day surgery services. The medical clinic provides patients with modern diagnostic equipment, such as MRI imaging equipment, similar to Mehiläinen Finland’s locations. The new medical clinic primarily serves Estonian customers, but Finnish customers can also use the services.
- We are very proud of our new medical clinic in Tallinn. It will contribute to strengthening our growth in the Estonian market by enabling us to provide high-quality health services to a wide customer base in the Tallinn region, says Andreas Taalas, Business Line Director for Mehiläinen.
Meliva continues to grow strongly in Estonia. Revenue for 2023 rose to EUR 48 million. Approximately 330,000 appointments were made, and the number of digital clinic users increased to almost 70,000. Meliva’s growth is being boosted by the acquisition of the dental company City Clinics, through which the dental clinics in Tallinn, Tartu and Kuressaare join the Meliva network. Approval from the authorities is still required to complete the transaction.
- City Clinics are a significant addition to our service package. The transaction strengthens our position as Estonia’s largest private healthcare service provider and national operator. In the future, Meliva will have 24 locations all over Estonia, says Taalas.
The new law on cross-border healthcare came into force in Finland on 1 May 2023, and Finns’ interest in seeking care in Estonia, for example, is thus growing. Kela reimburses the costs of the treatment provided in accordance with how the patient would have received treatment in a similar situation in Finnish public healthcare.
- The number of persons seeking treatment in Estonia is still at a very moderate level. In Finland, the queues for treatment are long and some patients have to live with a condition or symptom that complicates their everyday life for months. We believe that in the future, there will be an increasing number of people seeking treatment in Estonia, especially those queuing for examinations and surgeries, who want to get treatment faster, describes Mehiläinen's Head of International Marketing Mirella Rosenqvist.
