The limited NIPT test examines the following chromosomes:
Limited test + DiGeorge syndrome
In addition to the limited test, this test includes screening for DiGeorge syndrome:
The comprehensive NIPT examination offers the most extensive screening:
At Felicitas, the NIPT examination is a clear and carefully planned process. Our goal is to offer you as smooth and safe an experience as possible.
During the appointment, you will receive comprehensive information about the NIPT examination and its different options. The physician will assess your situation and provide a referral for the examination. At the same time, the duration of the pregnancy will be checked and, if desired, the first screening ultrasound scan will be performed.
A blood sample is taken from the arm when the pregnancy has lasted at least 10 weeks. This is a painless and quick operation.
The blood sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis, where the foetal DNA is separated from the mother's blood and examined for chromosomal abnormalities.
You will receive the results in the OmaMehiläinen app within 9–11 business days. If the result is abnormal, your doctor will contact you by phone. As this is a screening test, an abnormal result must be confirmed by amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling before any further measures.
After the NIPT examination, you will receive the results from your physician. It is important to remember that NIPT is a screening test. Even though it is extremely accurate, abnormal results always require confirmation by amniocentesis or a chorionic villus sample.
Felicitas specialists are there to support you in interpreting the results and making further plans. However, a normal result or normal chromosomes are not a guarantee of the health of the child to be born.
The NIPT test can be performed when the pregnancy has lasted at least 10 weeks. Usually, it is performed between pregnancy weeks 11–13+6. If desired, the test can also be performed later.
The NIPT test can be used to screen for the most common chromosomal abnormalities, such as the following trisomies: chromosome 13 (Patau syndrome), chromosome 18 (Edwards syndrome) and chromosome 21 (Down syndrome). All NIPT tests available to us also examine sex chromosomes. More extensive tests examine copy number variations and look for various microdeletion syndromes, such as DiGeorge syndrome.
The NIPT examination detects over 99% of trisomy 21 cases, 97–98% of trisomy 18 cases, and approximately 92% of trisomy 13 cases. Regarding the sex of the foetus, the reliability is 99.5%. False positive findings are detected in about 0.04–0.2% of NIPT examinations.
Yes, the NIPT test often makes it possible to avoid invasive amniocentesis and chorionic villus examinations. This significantly reduces the associated risk of miscarriage.
If the result of the NIPT test is abnormal, the diagnosis must always be confirmed with an amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling before any further action is taken.
Yes, the NIPT test can determine the sex of the foetus if the parents so wish. This is optional information that is provided with the results.
