An intrauterine pregnancy can often be detected by a vaginal ultrasound scan, i.e. performed via the vagina, at gestational weeks 5–6. This means as early as 1–2 weeks after the expected period was missed.
The foetal heartbeat is usually detectable as early as pregnancy week six, but at the latest at pregnancy weeks 7–8. In some cases, the heartbeat cannot be visualised even though the pregnancy has begun. In this situation, there is no need to worry yet. A new early ultrasound scan can be performed within approximately 1–2 weeks, at which point the heartbeat may well be visible.
An early pregnancy ultrasound scan usually relieves unnecessary worry regarding questions related to pregnancy. Mild pain and light bleeding occur quite often in early pregnancy. In these cases, too, it is advisable to confirm the normal continuation of the pregnancy with an ultrasound scan.
If you are nervous about the gynaecologist’s appointment or the early pregnancy ultrasound scan, please let the gynaecologist know. We do our best to ensure that the examination and treatment go as smoothly as possible.
