Maternity physiotherapy benefits:
Pregnancy is a natural thing for the body, but it can also cause pain or difficulty moving.
Sometimes you need to take a break from your sport in late pregnancy for safety reasons. Maternity physiotherapy will then provide advice on alternative exercise.
If you have not exercised before, pregnancy is a great time to change that. Our maternity physiotherapists will help you get off to a safe start.
We also treat pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain, back problems, and other ailments associated with pregnancy.
With the help of maternity physiotherapy during pregnancy, you can prevent pregnancy ailments and take care of your well-being during and after pregnancy.
You can start postnatal maternity physiotherapy as soon as you feel it is necessary.
There is no need to rush, and you can well focus first on learning everyday life with a baby. On the other hand, you do not need to wait if you have concerns or pain and wish to discuss matters related to your body's recovery.
You can come to an appointment even before the postnatal check-up, and lochia is not an obstacle to starting maternity physiotherapy either.
Pregnancy and childbirth shape the body quite a bit and change life in many ways. Your own body may feel unfamiliar, and various ailments may take you by surprise.
Maternity physiotherapy is goal-oriented treatment that is planned based precisely on your needs. A maternity physiotherapist's appointment is warm and unhurried. There is plenty of time for discussion. Our maternity physiotherapists will talk with you naturally about matters related to pregnancy, childbirth, and sexuality alike. You can talk to them confidentially even about topics that feel difficult.
Examining symptoms is part of the first appointment. If there is a need to examine the pelvic floor, it can be done in many ways: through an internal examination (for example, palpation with fingers via the vagina or rectum), an EMG (electromyography) device, or an ultrasound scan. We will choose the right way for you to find out the nature of your symptoms.
The goals of the treatment are recorded in the treatment plan. Your needs, wishes and situation are the starting point for everything.
Physiotherapy treatments carried out at the practice may include, for example, movement exercises and analgesia methods, such as massage, stretching, treatment of a Caesarean section or episiotomy scar, as well as physical therapies, such as heat treatments.
Home exercises are an important part of physiotherapy. You will receive detailed instructions to take with you from your physiotherapist. They are always tailored according to your life situation: the possibilities for rest and exercise are realistically taken into account.
Follow-up of results ensures progress. Sometimes one visit is enough, but often a few treatment sessions are needed. After the treatment period, the ailment has eased and you have tools to take care of your own well-being.
You are welcome to maternity physiotherapy just as you are. You can also come to the appointment with your baby. In that case, please check the location's access with a stroller.
Dress casually. Flexible clothing makes movement exercises more comfortable.
Sometimes it is important for the physiotherapist to see your body and posture clearly. In that case, you will be in your underwear during the appointment – if you are comfortable with it.

Maternity physiotherapy is a specialised field of physiotherapy that takes a comprehensive and preventative approach to the changes caused by pregnancy and childbirth in the body.
A maternity physiotherapist helps you take care of yourself and promote your well-being during the planning stage of pregnancy, during pregnancy, and after childbirth.
You will receive advice on exercise during pregnancy and postpartum, preparing for childbirth, recovery from childbirth, and help with painful conditions before and after childbirth.
You can come to maternity physiotherapy already while pregnant. Maternity physiotherapy is also suitable for those planning a pregnancy.
When you suspect that your ailment is in some way related to childbirth, you can come to maternity physiotherapy to have it treated even years after childbirth – there is no time limit.
If necessary, we will guide you to another professional’s appointment if your ailment requires other type of treatment.
Maternity physiotherapy can help you with, for example, planning exercise during pregnancy, pregnancy-related pain conditions, postpartum urinary incontinence and diastasis recti, surgical wound pain, neck and shoulder ailments caused by breastfeeding, planning postpartum recovery and exercise, and problems with sexual function.
Sometimes during a maternity physiotherapist’s appointment, you will be in your underwear so that the physiotherapist can see, for example, your posture without obstruction.
When examining pelvic floor problems, an internal physiotherapy examination is sometimes performed. It is always voluntary, and we make the situation as comfortable as possible.
During the appointment, you do not have to do anything that feels uncomfortable to you. We always discuss with you the ways to carry out examinations and exercises that are suitable for you.
You can bring your baby with you to maternity physiotherapy. Please always check with the service desk for a suitable route with a stroller.
