In a tubal patency examination, it is assessed whether oocytes and sperm can travel through the fallopian tubes. At the same time, an ultrasound scan can be used to examine the structure and mucous membrane of the uterus.
The examination can detect, for example, changes affecting the passage through the fallopian tubes as well as structural abnormalities of the uterus, such as myomas or polyps. The findings help the physician assess whether other examinations are needed or what kind of treatment might be suitable for the situation.
However, the examination alone does not explain all causes of infertility. Fertility is evaluated as a whole, taking into account factors such as ovulation, ovarian function, and semen quality.
A fallopian tube patency examination is performed at the physician's discretion as part of infertility examinations when it is assessed to be necessary. The examination can be particularly useful if you have previously had, for example, a chlamydia infection or surgeries in the abdominal area, which may increase the risk of fallopian tube blockage.
Preparing for a patency examination is simple. The most important thing is to schedule the examination for the early part of the menstrual cycle, immediately after menstruation before ovulation. Usually, this means cycle days 7–10 in a normal-length cycle.
Remember to take a painkiller, such as ibuprofen or paracetamol, approximately one hour before the examination so that any possible pain sensations remain minimal.
The fallopian tube patency examination usually takes about ten minutes. It begins with a gynaecological examination and a transvaginal ultrasound scan to assess the structure of the uterus and ovaries and take into account the phase of the cycle.
Next, a thin and flexible catheter is inserted into the cervical canal, allowing the administration of the contrast agent. This operation is usually painless.
Sterile saline is gently injected into the uterine cavity. With the help of the fluid, the inner surfaces of the uterus are better visible in an ultrasound scan, and any abnormalities can be detected.
Finally, an ultrasound scan is used to monitor how the saline solution injected through the catheter travels in the fallopian tubes. This shows whether the fallopian tubes are open and if the fluid can flow freely. Other contrast agents can also be used if necessary.
After the examination, there may be mild abdominal pain resembling menstrual cramps. The pain may also radiate to the shoulders, which is caused by saline solution and air entering the abdominal cavity. These sensations are harmless and usually pass during the day of the examination. You can take painkillers as needed.
The examination results are ready immediately, and the further plan will be discussed based on them.
Female fertility and its examination
Felicitas offers expert assistance in investigating female fertility. Examinations and treatment are always planned individually.
Male fertility and its examination
At Felicitas Mehiläinen, we offer expert support and comprehensive examinations for questions related to male fertility.
The examination may cause temporary pain or menstrual cramp-like cramping, especially during the examination when saline solution is introduced into the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes. The intensity of the pain varies individually. If necessary, painkillers can be used before the examination according to the instructions of the physician or the treatment facility.
Irregular periods do not usually prevent the examination, but determining a suitable time may be more difficult. The timing of the examination is planned individually so that pregnancy can be ruled out and the examination can be performed at an appropriate stage of the cycle.
If one fallopian tube is open and functions normally, pregnancy can still be possible naturally. However, the result is assessed together with other factors affecting fertility.
If the fallopian tube patency examination shows that the fallopian tubes are blocked, getting pregnant naturally is difficult or impossible. The physician will discuss further treatments with you, such as IVF treatment (IVF), where fertilisation takes place outside the body. Depending on the situation, other examinations or operations may also be considered to determine the cause and extent of the blockage.
Yes, after an SSG examination, you can usually try to achieve pregnancy even during the same cycle. The saline solution and air used in the examination leave the body naturally. Studies have shown that flushing the fallopian tubes may slightly increase the likelihood of pregnancy during the following months.
There is a small risk of inflammation associated with the examination. Before the examination, the physician will assess whether performing the examination is safe, for example, in terms of a possible active gynaecological inflammation. A fever, severe or worsening pain, or abnormal discharge/bleeding occurring after the examination is a reason to contact healthcare.
