There can be many different factors behind infertility that relate to the fertility of the woman, the man, or both. Sometimes a clear cause can be found, but a single cause cannot always be identified. Therefore, it is important to look at the situation as a whole.
The First appointment provides an opportunity to get a specialist’s view on the situation and to better understand what options are available. At the same time, you will receive information about which examinations or treatments may be current in your situation. Even when the cause of infertility is not clearly known, a suitable way forward can be planned.
It is advisable to investigate fertility if pregnancy has not begun as desired despite regular intercourse. Seeking examinations is generally recommended after one year of trying for those under 35 years of age, and already after six months of trying for those over 35 years of age.
You can also seek examinations earlier if the menstrual cycle is irregular, menstrual pain is severe, or there is reason to suspect, for example, endometriosis or an ovulation disorder. A previously diagnosed illness or abnormality affecting fertility, such as a myoma or an issue related to semen quality, can also be a reason to seek examinations without trying for longer.
If you are concerned about your situation, you can also come to the first appointment to discuss and clarify whether there is a need for examinations.
The first appointment is suitable for couples, single women, and female couples, as well as for anyone who wants to investigate their fertility or consider options related to their wish to have a child. Your personal situation, wishes, and any previous examinations and treatments are always taken into account at the appointment.
Donor gamete treatments can also be included as part of the care plan if using one's own gametes is not possible or desired. You will receive information about different options and their progression.
You can prepare for the appointment by filling in the patient information form in advance and gathering your previous examination and treatment records. This makes it easier during the appointment to focus on questions specific to you.
We will discuss your situation, your state of health, previous examinations and treatments, as well as your wishes. The content of the appointment depends on whether you have booked an appointment with a nurse or a physician.
If necessary, a gynaecological examination and an ultrasound scan will be performed at the physician's appointment. Other examinations will be planned according to your situation.
After the first appointment, the necessary examinations and next steps will be agreed upon. You will receive support from the nurses and the physician throughout the treatment path, and progress will be planned according to your wishes.
Once the examination results are ready, we will go over them with you and assess what should be done next based on them. Next steps may mean, for example, further examinations, support related to lifestyle or cycle monitoring, or starting infertility treatment.
Depending on the situation, the next step may be, for example, ovulation induction, insemination, or IVF treatment, i.e. in vitro fertilisation treatment. Donor gamete treatments can also be an option.
