Our sercives by age group
At Mehiläinen Femeda, we provide comprehensive care for women’s health and well-being. We have outlined key aspects of your health and wellness to attend to at each stage of life, and we are here to support you through every phase.
8–15 years old
The first signs of puberty can appear before the age of ten. The timing of puberty varies from person to person and is influenced by factors such as overall health, nutrition, levels of physical activity and rest, as well as hereditary factors.
When transitioning from youth to adulthood, it is important to maintain a varied and regular diet. Sufficient sleep and regular daily exercise are essential for your growth and hormonal development, as well as for your well-being, studies, and overall energy.
Maintaining social relationships and meeting friends face-to-face supports good mental well-being. It is also important to be aware that excessive use of social media and the internet can create an unhealthy body image and put unnecessary pressure on you. Remember, you are perfect and unique just as you are.
It is important to speak up about what troubles you. Often, a conversation with a professional can help you understand your own normality and individuality.
Awakening to sexuality is a unique experience for everyone. Sometimes, questions about your own sexual identity may arise even at an early stage, and that is completely normal. We are here to support you during these times. At Mehiläinen Femeda, you can also receive expert guidance on contraception.
Expert physiotherapists, sexual therapists, and psychotherapists are available to support you at different stages of your development. You may need guidance on a balanced and healthy diet, or support from an empathetic psychotherapist with personal issues that weigh on your mind. For physical problems during puberty or menstrual concerns, a youth gynecologist is available to help you.
15–20 years old
With your hormonal development, you have reached reproductive age. Your sexual identity, gender identity, and sexual orientation are becoming clearer and more defined for you.
The transition from youth to adulthood is an important stage of life. Gaining independence can bring a wide range of emotions. It can feel exciting, but also frightening. Saying goodbye to childhood is not always easy.
Sometimes it helps to talk about these feelings. Our mental well-being professionals are here to support you and help you understand and navigate these changes.
Dare to be yourself. Listen to your own feelings and accept yourself as you are. The expectations on social media do not always reflect what you truly want. Being different is a strength – embrace your uniqueness.
The first gynecologist visit usually takes place between the ages of 15 and 18. At Mehiläinen Femeda, we understand how important this is. It is important to us that you feel safe and know that your concerns will be heard.
Ideally, you will develop a confidential and open relationship with your gynecologist. A strong and trusting treatment relationship can often last for decades.
You can confidently turn to us with any questions about menstruation and contraception. Together, we can explore the most suitable form of contraception for you and review the different options. We are also here to support you with all matters related to sexual health and intimate concerns. Our care is based on openness, trust, and attentive presence.
20–45 years old
Your life is often busy, and it is important to take comprehensive care of your well-being. At this stage of life, attention to both physical and mental health, as well as gynecological matters, is important. These may include contraception, pregnancy, or conditions such as endometriosis. At Mehiläinen Femeda, our specialists are here to support you.
Becoming pregnant is not always straightforward. For those eagerly waiting, the process can feel long and challenging. Infertility can bring feelings of shame or failure, but often there is a treatable cause. It is important not to face infertility alone—reach out to us with confidence for support.
Pregnancy is one of life’s most transformative experiences. It affects both body and mind as your body prepares to nurture the beginning of a new life.
Every pregnancy is unique. It is natural to feel fear or uncertainty at times. Our therapy services support you with mental health during pregnancy and afterwards, including guidance in your transition to parenthood.
Pregnancy monitoring primarily takes place at the maternity clinic, but we offer specialized expertise when needed. For common physical discomforts caused by pregnancy, physiotherapy is available, and you can also enjoy a pregnancy massage. After childbirth, you may choose to have a postnatal check-up with your own gynecologist.
Prenatal screening examinations provide information on the health of the fetus and can detect structural or chromosomal abnormalities. Ultrasound scans track the fetus’s growth and development. We also offer 3-4D ultrasound for a more detailed view of fetal structures.
45–60 years old
Menopause is a natural transition into a new stage of life. Many experience it as a time that brings a new sense of adulthood. Learn to appreciate yourself and enjoy this new phase of life.
Menopause is not an illness but a natural transition in your hormonal activity. Fluctuations in estrogen, the female sex hormone, begin several years before menstruation stops, marking the official onset of menopause. Pre-menstrual symptoms may become more pronounced, and changes in the menstrual cycle are common. If these changes affect your quality of life, consult a gynecologist – help is available for the symptoms.
For many, the busy years are behind them, and there is now more time for yourself. In this stage of life, sexuality can also change in different ways. You may, for example, notice a decrease in sexual desire. In such cases, it is wise to consult a sexual therapist. There is always a solution for these concerns.
As metabolism slows and muscle mass decreases, it is natural for weight to increase. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, and a balanced diet is therefore important.
The risk of developing breast cancer gradually rises from around 40–50 years of age. Regular breast examinations, both self-checks and those performed by your gynecologist, are recommended.
If needed, we can provide mammography and ultrasound scans, even before routine screenings begin and in addition to them. Early detection of cancer improves the prognosis and can influence the scope of necessary treatments.
Regular gynecological appointments are recommended. Ultrasound scans can help detect any changes or abnormalities in the ovaries and uterus. It is also important to attend cervical cancer screenings at least every five years, and if needed, your gynecologist can take samples to investigate any concerns.
Over 60 years old
Reaching retirement age can bring a new sense of freedom. You now have more time for yourself and the opportunity to pursue your own dreams. Embrace and enjoy this stage of life to the fullest.
The benefits of a healthy lifestyle, a balanced and varied diet, and regular daily exercise can never be overstated. Make sure to attend regular medical check-ups and gynecologist appointments, and take care of your bone health.
By the age of sixty at the latest, it is advisable to have a bone density scan. This examination assesses the condition of your bones and helps prevent or manage potential osteoporosis.
In summary, avoiding smoking and excess weight, combined with adequate rest and regular exercise at any age, helps slow down biological aging. For healthy bones, it is important to ensure sufficient intake of calcium and vitamin D. A heart-healthy diet supports cardiovascular health, helps prevent coronary artery disease, and keeps cholesterol levels in check. Regular check-ups also help identify if any medication or treatment is needed.
A positive and joyful attitude toward life has been shown to contribute to a longer lifespan. With age, sexuality and sexual activity naturally change, and desire or activity may decrease. Visiting a relationship or sexual therapist is natural and recommended, even for older adults.
Sometimes, a lack of desire may have a physical cause. For example, dryness of the mucous membranes can make intercourse uncomfortable and reduce enjoyment. It is important to mention any such symptoms during gynecologist appointments – help is always available.
As we age, the risk of developing cancer increases significantly. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can substantially reduce this risk. Many women’s cancers are most effectively detected through regular medical check-ups, gynecologist visits, and ultrasound or mammography screenings. Cancer that is detected early is always easier to treat.
