Revised 9/15/2026
Published 9/15/2026
Ovulation is a prerequisite for the onset of pregnancy. Ovulation disorders can manifest, for example, as an irregular or prolonged menstrual cycle or as the absence of menstruation. However, ovulation can also be confirmed through examinations when the menstrual cycle is regular.
A normal menstrual cycle usually lasts 23–35 days. The length of the menstrual cycle varies particularly depending on when ovulation occurs. The length of the phase preceding ovulation can vary from cycle to cycle, whereas the phase after ovulation is usually more constant and lasts about 12–14 days.
In all situations, the exact timing of ovulation does not need to be determined. In a normal situation, intercourse every 2–3 days during the cycle is usually sufficient to enable pregnancy to begin.
Menstrual cycle examinations can be useful, for example, if:
Our specialist evaluates your situation as a whole and plans the necessary examinations based on it.
The examinations are timed for different phases of the menstrual cycle. Not all examinations described below are necessarily needed in every situation.
Around day 10 of the cycle, an ultrasound scan is performed via the vagina if necessary. With it, our specialist monitors the growth of the ovarian follicle, or follicle, and assesses the timing of approaching ovulation.
During the ultrasound scan, the thickness and structure of the uterine mucous membrane can also be assessed.
As ovulation approaches, the secretion of the LH hormone increases. An ovulation test performed on urine can identify this LH surge.
An ovulation test is usually positive approximately 1–2 days before ovulation. If necessary, our specialist will provide instructions on performing and timing the test.
After ovulation, the luteal phase begins, during which the corpus luteum formed from the ovarian follicle produces progesterone.
The progesterone level can be measured approximately one week after a positive ovulation test. In a regular 28-day cycle, the measurement is usually timed for cycle days 21–23.
Changes indicative of ovulation can also be seen in an ultrasound scan, such as the formation of the corpus luteum and changes in the structure of the uterine mucous membrane.
We assess the examination results as a whole. Our specialist will review with you what the results tell about ovulation and the functioning of the menstrual cycle, as well as whether further examinations are needed to clarify your situation.
After the menstrual cycle examinations, you will better understand whether ovulation occurs and how your menstrual cycle functions. Based on the results, we will assess whether further examinations are needed or whether you can proceed without special measures.
If the examinations detect a disorder related to ovulation or hormonal function, our specialist will explain what it means in terms of getting pregnant and what treatment options are available in the situation.
If the examinations reveal no abnormalities related to ovulation or the function of your menstrual cycle, you will receive instructions on how to proceed with your wish to have a baby and when it is advisable to continue investigating the situation.
Yes. The timing of ovulation can be estimated at home with a urine ovulation test. The test detects the rise in the LH hormone, which usually precedes ovulation by about 1–2 days.
However, an ovulation test does not confirm that ovulation actually occurs. If certainty is needed about whether ovulation occurs, the situation can be assessed, for example, by means of an ultrasound scan and progesterone measurement.
It is advisable to seek examinations if the menstrual cycle is repeatedly irregular or exceptionally long, or if menstruation stops. There may also be reason for examinations when pregnancy has not begun as desired and there is uncertainty about whether ovulation occurs.
Yes, despite a regular menstrual cycle, ovulation may fail to occur. A regular menstrual cycle alone does not ensure that ovulation takes place.
If necessary, our specialist can confirm ovulation, for example, with an ultrasound scan and a progesterone measurement.
It is possible to become pregnant especially around the time of ovulation and in the days preceding it. Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for several days, so pregnancy can also begin from intercourse that occurs before ovulation.
When trying to conceive, intercourse does not usually need to be timed precisely to a specific day.
Yes, it is also possible to become pregnant during menstruation, although it is generally less likely. If ovulation occurs early and there is still sperm in the reproductive tract at the time of ovulation, intercourse during menstruation can lead to a pregnancy.
