Mehiläinen Tomodent is a pioneer in oral X-ray examinations. Over 40 years of experience in oral X-ray diagnostics and treatment planning with treating dentists is reflected in the quality of our work. We perform all X-ray examinations required in dental care, such as individual images, panoramic images, full dentition and jaw imaging, and cone beam computed tomography of the paranasal sinuses. We invest in exceptionally precise image quality and radiation hygiene to ensure that the examination is both reliable and safe.
We also provide reports for X-ray images taken elsewhere.

Panoramic tomography, or a panoramic X-ray, shows the entire dentition, jawbones, and temporomandibular joints at once. It can reveal, for example, hidden cavities, inflammations, unerupted teeth, cysts, and jaw changes that a clinical oral examination alone would not detect. The examination is quick and painless.
The radiation dose is kept as low as possible with modern equipment. A panoramic image often serves as a starting point for further planning and, if necessary, for more detailed additional examinations.
Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT, or 3D cone beam imaging) produces a three-dimensional image of the teeth, jawbones, and paranasal sinuses. Cone beam examination helps to refine the diagnosis and treatment plan in situations where a conventional X-ray is insufficient. CBCT imaging is utilized, among other things, in planning root canal treatments, placing implants, assessing the position of unerupted teeth, examining the temporomandibular joint, and addressing paranasal sinus problems. The images are reported by a dental radiologist, and the results are available quickly.
Doctors and specialists
A lateral skull image (cephalometric image) is a key examination in orthodontic treatment. It is used to assess jaw relationships, facial growth direction, and tooth position, allowing orthodontic treatment to be planned individually. The imaging is also used to monitor treatment progression and final results. Modern imaging improves the accuracy of measurements and helps select the correct treatment method with the lowest possible radiation dose.
Why are dental X-ray examinations performed?
X-ray examination is an essential part of basic dental care. Asymptomatic inflammations, cysts, unerupted teeth, and hidden cavities between teeth or under fillings are not always visible in a clinical examination performed at the practice. X-rays reveal these early, making treatment simpler and more affordable.
Detecting dental inflammations is also important for general health. Dental-origin inflammations are often mildly symptomatic or asymptomatic.
Localizing inflammations
Localizing and treating oral inflammations is always important for both oral and general health. If left untreated, chronic dental inflammation can spread into the bloodstream through the tooth root or gum and cause a serious infection.
X-ray examination before demanding treatments
An X-ray examination of the dentition and jaws should always be performed before organ transplantation, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy to the jaw area. The examination is also important before joint, vascular, and heart valve prosthesis surgery so that any dental-origin inflammations can be treated before the procedure.
Weakened immunity emphasizes the importance of oral health
Diabetes, liver and kidney failure, connective tissue diseases, and regular cortisone medication reduce the body’s immunity, which is why detecting and treating oral inflammations is important for overall health.
