Dental staining
Facts about dental staining
- Dental staining can be caused by many different factors, such as cavities, enamel development disorders, excessive intake of fluoride, tobacco and coffee.
- Dental staining is removed at the dentist's or dental hygienist's appointment through different methods, such as ultrasonic devices, hand instruments, and intensive whitening.
- To prevent tooth discolouration, you can avoid tooth-colouring foods and nicotine products, as well as take good care of your dental hygiene. Long-term use of whitening toothpaste is not recommended.
What causes dental staining?
Typically, superficial tooth discolourations are caused by, for example, tobacco, snuff, coffee, tea, cola drinks, red wine, dark juices, and soy sauce. Temporary dental and tongue staining can also be caused by dental care products containing chlorhexidine.
Prevention of dental staining
The most effective way to avoid dental stains and discolouration is to avoid tooth-colouring foods and nicotine products, as well as take good care of dental hygiene.
To some extent, whitening toothpastes from pharmacies and shops can be used to prevent superficial stains on teeth. The mechanism of action of these toothpastes is enzymatic or mechanical. Mechanical stain removers abrade the surface of the tooth, wearing it down, and thus long-term use can damage the tooth enamel and make it even easier for stains to adhere to the worn surface of the tooth. Long-term use of abrasive toothpaste is, therefore, not recommended. It is advisable to discuss the use of these products with your dental care professional.

Frequently asked questions
Staining causes roughness on the surface of the teeth, which exposes them to new staining and the formation of tartar.
When choosing a whitening toothpaste, it is a good idea to consult a dental care professional and check the toothpaste's mechanism of action. With long-term use, tooth enamel can be eroded by mechanically removing stains, making stains more likely to stick to the surface of the teeth.
It is sometimes challenging or impossible to remove stains, in which case the discolouration can be covered with a filler in the colour of the adjacent teeth, ceramic laminate or a tooth crown.
