Childbirth coaching led by a midwife helps you and your support person prepare for delivery with gentle mental support and concrete instructions. The coaching covers the various stages of delivery and different methods of giving birth, from vaginal delivery to caesarean section. You will also receive information about possible operations, such as vacuum extraction delivery, as well as non-medicinal and medicinal pain relief methods.
In the coaching, you will learn breathing techniques and movements that help the body prepare for delivery. In addition, you will receive information about the role of the support person and how they can assist during delivery. The coaching also covers starting breastfeeding and the key aspects of baby care.
It is advisable to attend childbirth preparation coaching when the pregnancy has progressed to weeks 28–30. You can also participate in the coaching earlier. It can be particularly useful for first-time mothers and when there are questions or concerns related to childbirth.
Coaching can also help when a previous childbirth experience raises questions or if you feel afraid of childbirth. You will receive clear information and support to help you prepare calmly, including for a planned induction of labour or a caesarean section.
Childbirth coaching is suitable for everyone who is pregnant and giving birth – first-time parents and those who have given birth before. It is also useful for support persons and families who want a clear understanding of the course of childbirth and their own role.
You will receive support from the coaching even if the mode of delivery has not yet been decided. The content is tailored to the needs of the family.
Choose a suitable time for the coaching for pregnancy weeks 28–36. We recommend participating on site, as it allows for more practical and rewarding guidance on topics such as breastfeeding and baby care. Remote coaching is a good alternative if attending in person is not possible.
You can prepare for the coaching in advance by thinking about what you would like to cover during the session. With these tips, you will get the most out of the coaching:
Childbirth coaching usually consists of a maximum of three sessions, during which a midwife goes through the different stages of delivery and the most important themes with you.
In the second session, we will dive into the progress of childbirth and the importance of a support person.
Stages of vaginal delivery
We will go through the different stages of vaginal delivery from the dilation stage to the pushing stage and the placental stage. You will also learn how a support person can be involved during delivery, for example through presence, touch, breathing support, and practical arrangements.
Exceptional delivery situations
We will also discuss other modes of delivery, such as Caesarean section and vacuum delivery, as well as what happens in these situations.
At the third meeting, we will prepare for everyday life with a baby and returning home.
Starting breastfeeding and the basics of baby care
We go over early skin-to-skin contact, the first hours, and the basics of starting breastfeeding, as well as different breastfeeding positions. You will get practical tips for baby care during the first weeks and months, and learn to identify the baby's alertness states and ensure safety in everyday life in various situations.
Everyday life with a baby and baby essentials
We discuss everyday life with a baby, your own coping, and the importance of a support network. We also go over necessary purchases for the baby and what to consider when making them.
After the coaching, you and your support person will be better prepared for delivery and everyday life with a baby. You will receive a comprehensive information package that covers baby care and breastfeeding in addition to delivery. It is easy to return to the written materials even after the coaching.
If any topic still raises questions, you can book a follow-up appointment with a midwife or a gynaecologist. If you suspect that labour has started, contact the maternity ward in your area.
It is a good idea to bring your own questions and wishes to the coaching. For example, you can ask about the onset of labour, pain relief, going to the hospital, the role of a support person, or situations related to childbirth that you are particularly wondering about.
A previous childbirth experience or fears related to the upcoming delivery are also good topics for discussion.
Yes. Childbirth preparation coaching can also be beneficial for someone giving birth again. A previous childbirth may be different from the upcoming one, and, for example, a changed life situation, a new partner or questions raised by a previous birth can make the coaching useful.
It is not mandatory, but we warmly recommend it. Participating together strengthens the role of the support person and provides tools to offer support during delivery. If you participate alone, we will go through the ways in which you can guide your support person during delivery.
Yes. Coaching is a gentle and safe place to address fears related to childbirth. Receiving information about the progress of childbirth, pain relief, and various childbirth situations can help organize your thoughts and prepare for what is ahead.
In the case of severe fear of childbirth, it is advisable to discuss the matter with a healthcare professional already during pregnancy. If needed, we will refer you to further support.
Childbirth classes are not mandatory, but recommended. Coaching increases knowledge, creates realistic expectations, and provides practical tools for a smooth start to childbirth and everyday life with a baby. Feeling well prepared supports a calm childbirth experience.
