In a natural cycle, the embryo reaches the blastocyst stage once it has travelled from the fallopian tube to the uterus. At this stage, it is ready to attach to the mucous membrane of the uterus. Therefore, it is more timely to transfer a blastocyst into the uterus than, for example, an embryo that is only three days old.
Once the eggs have been collected and fertilised, the embryo’s cells begin to divide.
Cleavage stage (days 2–4) Between the second and fourth day, the embryo is in the cleavage stage. It has 2–16 cells that are easy to distinguish from each other. On the third day, there are often eight cells.
Blastocyst stage (usually day 5) The blastocyst stage is reached when the number of cells increases into the hundreds and the junctions between them tighten. The embryo is then a spherical cell cluster containing a fluid-filled cavity. The blastocyst consists of two parts:
The blastocyst is surrounded by a shell that thins and softens as the embryo grows. Eventually, the blastocyst hatches out of its shell. After this, it is ready to attach to the mucous membrane of the uterus.
Approximately 40–50 percent of fertilised eggs develop into a blastocyst. Development may stop, for example, due to chromosomal or genetic defects. Sometimes an embryo that looks promising on the third day does not develop into a blastocyst after all. At other times, an embryo that appears ordinary continues its development into a high-quality blastocyst.
