Gamete donation means donating eggs or sperm to be used in fertility treatments. For many, this is the only way to have a child when they do not have their own gametes or gamete function is impaired.
Donated gametes can be used to perform fertility treatments, such as inseminations and in vitro fertilisations. The donation process is safe and ethical.
Gamete donation is a significant act that allows you to help childless families. If you have considered helping and meet the donation criteria, you can explore your possibilities as a donor. There is a constant shortage of donors, and a donated gamete can be a dream come true for many.
You may be suitable as a gamete donor if:
To ensure the suitability of gametes, donors undergo thorough health examinations, which include blood and urine samples, among other things.

Book an appointment for a counselling visit, where you will receive an information package on the donation process and legislation. We will discuss the donation criteria and answer your questions so that you understand the process in its entirety.
We perform a comprehensive health examination, which includes a gynaecological examination for women, an ultrasound scan, blood tests and urine samples. The examinations determine suitability for gamete donation. Donor candidates also receive psychological counselling.
When all test results are in order, you will sign a donation consent, which is a legally binding document.
Egg donors receive the medications intended for hormone therapy and injection guidance, which prepare the body for egg retrieval.
Egg donors undergo egg retrieval under effective intravenous pain medication. Sperm donors provide a semen sample at the clinic.
After gamete donation, a follow-up examination is arranged for donors. After egg donation, recovery is usually rapid, and any symptoms are mild. You can contact a nurse or physician throughout the process if you have any questions or concerns regarding the donation.
In Finland, gamete donation involves rights and obligations laid down by law. It is important for donors to know in advance how their personal data is processed, what rights a person born from donated gametes has, and what donation means in practice.
The donor’s personal data is stored in the donor register maintained by the Finnish Supervisory Agency. The donor is given an identification code, which is used when handling donated gametes instead of the donor’s name.
The register also contains information such as eye and hair colour, height and ethnic origin. This information may be used when selecting a suitable donor.
A person born from donated gametes has the right to obtain the donor’s personal data after turning 18. The donor, on the other hand, has no legal rights or obligations towards the child born as a result of the donation.
Once this limit has been reached, the same donor’s gametes may no longer be used for fertility treatments for new recipients in Finland.
General practitioner Emilia Vuorisalmi and specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology Anna-Kaisa Poranen, Felicitas Mehiläinen Turku, discuss gamete donation in Finnish.

Gametes can be donated by generally healthy women aged 22–35 years and generally healthy men aged 22–40 years. The donor must not have hereditary diseases, and they are required to lead a healthy lifestyle.
Gamete donation does not affect the donor’s own fertility. In egg donation, only eggs matured during that cycle are collected, and it does not reduce the total number of eggs. Sperm donation does not impair a man's fertility either.
According to Finnish law, gametes from one donor may result in children in a maximum of five different families. This is to ensure that not too many biological offspring of a donor are born in the same geographical area.
In Finland, gamete donation is regulated by the Act on Assisted Fertility Treatments. The National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health supervises compliance with the act.
Donation is always voluntary and anonymous, but the child has the right to access the donor’s personal data upon turning 18 years of age. All donors are registered in the donation register.
Donors are paid an expense allowance that covers, for example, travel expenses and loss of earnings for visits related to the donation process. In addition, a one-off compensation of EUR 350 is paid for egg donation.
