The fertility of women decreases with age. Generally, it can be said that fertility begins to decline significantly after the age of 35. With age, the number and quality of oocytes in the ovaries decrease, and chromosomal abnormalities in them increase. Chromosomal abnormalities are most commonly an obstacle to pregnancy and a cause of miscarriages in women over 40.
Oocyte cryopreservation can be considered if you have a disease or are facing treatments that may impair your fertility. The younger the oocytes are frozen, the better their quality. Oocyte cryopreservation is recommended before the age of 30. Depending on the situation, oocyte cryopreservation may be possible up to the age of 35. Our specialists always assess individually whether oocyte cryopreservation is a suitable solution for you.
Preparation for egg freezing usually begins with an initial assessment and a physician's appointment. During this, your health status will be reviewed and necessary examinations will be performed. Before egg retrieval, you will be given hormone medication to stimulate the ovaries to produce more eggs. It is important to follow the physician's instructions carefully and ask about any concerns you may have.
The egg freezing process at Felicitas Mehiläinen is carefully planned and executed. Our goal is to make your experience as safe and pleasant as possible.
You will receive hormone medication that matures multiple oocytes. The effect of the medication is monitored with ultrasound scans.
When the oocytes are mature, they are collected under ultrasound guidance in a procedure performed vaginally. The procedure is performed under sedative medication.
The collected oocytes are rapidly cryopreserved using the vitrification method. They are stored in liquid nitrogen at -196 degrees Celsius.
Frozen oocytes are stored at Felicitas Mehiläinen's premises until you decide to use them. The prerequisites for treatment with frozen oocytes are assessed when the situation is current.
After egg retrieval, you can usually go home on the same day. Recovery is usually quick, and you can return to normal daily life within a few days. You will receive precise instructions for aftercare and how to prepare for possible symptoms. If you experience severe pain or other worrying symptoms, contact Felicitas Mehiläinen immediately.
We recommend collecting about 20 oocytes. The oocyte cryopreservation agreement is made for three years at a time, after which the need for cryopreservation is re-evaluated.
Frozen oocytes can remain viable for decades. Storage in liquid nitrogen stops the aging of the cells, so their quality does not deteriorate during storage.
The cost of egg freezing consists of physician services, medication, egg retrieval and cryopreservation, and annual storage costs. At Felicitas Mehiläinen, we will provide you with an accurate cost estimate in connection with your treatment plan. We ensure that you can make informed decisions and clearly understand all costs.
Freezing egg cells is most effective when done at a young age, preferably under 30-35 years old. At this age, the quality of the egg cells is at its best, and the probability of success is highest. Age significantly affects the quantity and quality of egg cells.
