I am a maternity and pelvic floor physiotherapist, psychophysical physiotherapist, and TMD physiotherapist specialising in musculoskeletal disorders and analgesia, as well as the prevention and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal disorders in pregnant and postpartum clients. At my practice, I treat children, young people, and adults, as well as customers with backgrounds in trauma, fear, and SERI (sexual assault). I am also part of Mehiläinen Turku's multidisciplinary eating disorder team.
As a physiotherapist, I am gentle and attentive. I am happy to assist you with questions related to the prevention and treatment of various dysfunctions and pain. In physiotherapy, we progress individually according to the customer's goals and wishes. At my practice, I also perform manual therapy as needed as part of analgesia, as well as scar tissue massage for post-surgical scars, such as caesarean section and perineal tear/episiotomy scars, as well as cancer surgery scars.
Typical reasons for seeking an appointment with my maternity or pelvic floor physiotherapy practice include: pelvic floor dysfunctions, treatment of tightness & pain conditions in the pelvic floor and pelvic region, pregnancy physiotherapy and birth preparation, physiotherapeutic birth preparation & physiotherapeutic postnatal check-up, pre- and postoperative rehabilitation and guidance on returning to sport-specific training, rehabilitation of diastasis recti, scar treatments, etc.
Pelvic floor physiotherapy is physiotherapy specialising in the pelvic region, always carried out individually according to the customer's needs, resources, and goals. The therapy does not focus solely on the pelvic area, as the pelvic floor, as a multidimensional structure, participates in many body functions; such as posture and postural control, lower limbs, the masticatory system, sexual functions, and breathing.
In pelvic floor physiotherapy, awareness of one's own body and the function of the pelvic floor is essential. The above is beneficial to everyone regardless of age, gender, and life situation. For instance, in sports and in work and professions requiring voice use, pelvic floor physiotherapy can yield effective results.
Physiotherapy can include, among other things: prevention and rehabilitation of pelvic floor dysfunctions, treatment of pain conditions in the back and pelvic area, prevention and rehabilitation of gynaecological prolapses, prevention and rehabilitation of urinary and faecal incontinence, exercise guidance during pregnancy and after delivery, workout programmes for home and/or gym as well as athletes' sport-specific supplementary training etc., prevention and rehabilitation of diastasis recti, scar care and self-care (e.g. C-section, episiotomy, tears), treatment and prevention of pelvic girdle pain, taping & guidance on the use of support belts, preparation for childbirth and recovery after childbirth, physiotherapeutic postnatal check-up, ultrasound scan and/or internal examination (at the customer's request), manual therapies and massage (e.g. examination and treatment of masticatory muscles), and matters related to sexual functions, such as the treatment of dyspareunia or orgasmic disorders.
A warm welcome to the practice! If you have any questions, please contact johanna.tossavainen@mehilainen.fi
