Semen cryopreservation is an effective way to preserve fertility, for example, before medical treatments affecting sperm production or sterilization.
Cryopreservation can facilitate fertility treatments in situations where sample collection is difficult or sperm count is low.
At Felicitas Mehiläinen, we ensure the safety of samples and offer expert support throughout the entire cryopreservation and treatment path.
An appointment for semen cryopreservation can be booked by phone at 0104146650 (local network rate/mobile call rate).
No Kanta fee or outpatient fee is charged for the cryopreservation and storage of gametes and embryos. The Kanta fee (€4.20) and outpatient fee (€37.90) will be added to the thawing and frozen embryo transfer.

Semen cryopreservation is possible for several reasons related to preserving fertility or facilitating future fertility treatments.
Before semen cryopreservation, it is important to ensure the quality and safety of the sample.
Giving a semen sample and the cryopreservation process are designed to be as smooth and safe as possible.
Multiple sample donation sessions may be needed depending on your situation and the quality of the semen. You will receive instructions on this from the clinic after the first cryopreservation.
When the semen is received, the personnel will verify the identity of the person giving the sample, so please bring your ID card.
Semen can be frozen as such, or it can be concentrated or washed, whereby the best quality sperm are separated from the seminal plasma into a cell cultivation medium prior to cryopreservation. The procedure depends on the quality and intended use of the sample. A solution containing cryoprotectants is used as the freezing medium.
A plastic capillary tube, or freezing straw, is used as a storage vessel. The straws are preserved at the clinic in liquid nitrogen at a temperature of –196.6 °C, where the cells remain viable for years.
The sperm is thawed on the day of fertilisation. The number of straws to be thawed depends on the chosen fertilisation method and the quality of the sample. After thawing, the proportion of viable sperm and their motility are examined from the sample, and the sample is prepared for fertilisation.
When freezing gametes, a cryopreservation agreement is drawn up which defines the terms of storage.
The cryopreservation agreement is valid for three (3) years. It is drawn up at the clinic in connection with the first cryopreservation and delivered to you completed once the cryopreservation process is finished.
The storage fee is invoiced annually for as long as gametes remain and the agreement is in force.
The agreement can be terminated at any time by notifying the clinic in writing, whereby the storage is terminated and the gametes are destroyed. When the agreement expires, you can continue the storage by notifying the clinic, whereby the agreement is renewed for a fixed period. If the agreement has not been renewed, the agreement expires on its last day of validity without separate termination and the gametes are destroyed.
Frozen semen can be utilized in various fertility treatments. * **Treatment methods:** Depending on the quality of the semen, after thawing, it can be used in insemination, in vitro fertilisation (IVF), or microinjection (ICSI) treatments. The treatment plan is always made in consultation with a physician. * **Thawing process:** Sperm are thawed on the day of fertilisation. The number of straws to be thawed depends on the chosen fertilisation method and the quality of the sample. After thawing, the proportion of live sperm and their motility are examined from the sample, and the sample is prepared for fertilisation.
