After the initial discussion, a gynaecological examination is usually performed, assessing the condition of the vulva, vagina, uterus and ovaries. The condition of the pelvic floor muscles can also be assessed.
An ultrasound scan is performed at the practice, which allows a clear view of the uterus and ovaries and their surrounding structures. The ultrasound scan is usually performed transvaginally, but it can also be performed transabdominally.
Sometimes, to confirm a diagnosis, samples are needed, for example, for sexually transmitted diseases or inflammation. A Pap smear or HPV sample can also be taken at the practice if you have not participated in national cervical cancer screening recently or if it is otherwise necessary.
Additional examinations performed at the practice, such as a Pap smear, are charged separately and always require the client's consent.
A basic gynaecological examination includes a breast examination, especially if you do not examine them regularly yourself. The gynaecologist can, if necessary, make a referral for breast imaging examinations, such as mammography.
At the end of the appointment, the gynaecologist will create an individual care plan for you, which will make it easy for you to take the best possible care of your gynaecological health.
