Dental fillings

Dental filling refers to the removal of a cavity from the dental tissue and replacing it with filling.

Very advanced dental caries that can no longer be stopped is the most common reason for dental fillings. If dental caries has advanced from the tooth’s enamel deeper to the dentine, the tooth has to be filled.

In dental fillings, several methods and materials can be used, such as composite resin, ceramic material, glass ionomer cement, amalgam or gold. The dentist will recommend the most suitable material and filling method.

How is the tooth filled?

First, the dentist will remove the dental tissue damaged by caries from the tooth using a manual instrument or a drill. If the dentine has only minor damage, the drill is not needed. It is sometimes possible to use a laser.

After the removal of the dental tissue, the dentist will treat the hole that is created with a treatment agent so that the filling sticks. After the duration of the effect, the tooth is rinsed and dried.

The dentist places the filling into the tooth and adjusts the filling to fit the occlusion using a micromotor drill. The filling adjustment is checked using an articulating foil, which shows whether the filling must be further adjusted.

Materials used in filling

Currently, most fillings are made of composite resin. Ceramic particles, fillers, are often added to the composite resins to improve the durability of the filling.

A glass ionomer filling may be used in milk teeth, fillings in the gumline and under the composite resin. Amalgam fillings in the back teeth are durable, but rarely used nowadays.

Porcelain is also durable and aesthetic filling material. At some clinics, Hammas Mehiläinen’s dentist can manufacture ceramic Cerec fillings and crowns in a single visit.

It usually only takes one appointment to fill the tooth, but several appointments may be needed for manufacturing ceramic and gold fillings.

The price of dental fillings
